Ice Park Closes Early

Greetings to All! Fairbanks is experiencing a spectacular spring season, this being the third day in a row that the temperature has breached the +50F in the Park, it's just too much for the ice.

So we are announcing that today is the last day to play in the Park.

Good afternoon! I just got the call from Mr. Brickley. The Pins just arrived this afternoon.

The office is working out the logistics of trying to get everyone their souvenir pin. After today, since the Park is closes there's not likely to be regular staffing at the office.

For sure, beginning May 1st the Pins will be available at the Ice Museum downtown. If you need to pick up your pin, prior to May 1st, you can call the Park Office at 451-8250 and make sure someone is on site before you stop by.

I understand that also a number of folks have already left Alaska, and the Park Office will be working on mailings also.

-Best Regards, Rhonda Konicki, Ice AK Volunteer

Greetings to all. We were beat up pretty good by the warm weather. Temps reached above 50F in the Park today and that caused some serious issues with the ice rink and the ice maze, which have both been shut down.

The giant slides, however, are still open and the Single Block Exhibits are holding up in the shade of the trees.

The planned closure date for the Park is this coming Sunday, so bring the kids and bring your sleds!

A Day at the Park

The heat of competition is over and like many of the artists and volunteers, I have gone back to my regular day job.  I stopped by the Ice Park today to catch up on the support needs from my department, in Web and Media.  For me, the big show is the building of the Park, and the competitions in Single Block and Multi Block exhibits.  But, for a lot of folks, the Park is the big attraction, with it's train ride tour, and especially for the kids, even the adult kids, the abundance of slides.  For the next couple weeks, as the days get longer and the weather warms up, many here in town, will meet and mingle around the ice park, a frozen playground.

Julio Martinez, artist and competitor in both the Single Block and Multi Block competitions, oversees the Ice Art Classes.  Here he is providing instruction in carving techniques

Final Minutes of Multi Block Competition

11:00 p.m. AKST - It's been a stressful day for the Artists. Earlier today it warmed up above freezing, it's been snowing all afternoon, currently the temperature has cooled down to +31F (-1C) with light snow, and the Artists are hard working, finishing up, brushing snow, and preparing their exhibits for final judging.

Multi Block Classic Extension

Due to the weather this past week Ice Alaska has extended the deadline for the artists to  complete their pieces in the GCI Multi Block Classic till midnight tonight instead of the original schedule of 9:00 PM.

Mary Matthews’ comment regarding the time extension reflects the sentiments of all the Judges and all the volunteers at Ice Alaska:

“I am sad for the carvers who have to battle the temps. How disappointing
for them to look forward all year to the event and then basically be super
uber challenged. At least I get to go home, take a nap, feel refreshed, and
stand there in front of their struggles with my sharp pencil.”

Greetings from the Ice Park

It's a balmy +36F (+2.2C) outside.  The roads are wet with melting snow.  Here at Ice Alaska, the work has slowed down.  Many of the large exhibits have been covered to protect them from the damaging heat of the sun, waiting for this evening when it cools back down below freezing and is safe to work again.

Above, Site 16, "Fire and Ice", resting under cover for this evening when the temperatures drop below +32F (0C).

Meanwhile, the Artists keep their sense of humor.  Hamming it up for the camera as I worked my way through Multi Block Lane.  They're not too stressed now, but wait until tomorrow, Day 6, and the final day of the Multi Block Competition.

Team 10: Junichi Nakamura, Shinichi Sawamura, and Dean Murray pause to pose.

Team 07: Sergei Zinner, Alex Glushko, and Steve Dean posing for passers by.  This is Alex's (center holding the long saw) first competition, and in all the years I've been volunteering for Ice Alaska, I don't think I've ever seen a more happier participant!

Weather Delays for Ice Alaska

We've had a pretty wacky weather weekend!

Saturday, the Ice Park was all abuzz with activities,  finishing touches to the Kids Park and preparing for the start of the Single Block Competition .

Then in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it began to rain.  The temperature had warmed up to above freezing, and instead of morning snow, we had morning rain.  At 4:00 a.m. I was out side pulling heavy slush off the awning and checking other things in the back yard that might collapse under the now rain and ice laden snow.

By 9:00 a.m. most public activities had been canceled, and the Ice Alaska Executive Committee made the announcement that they would postpone the start of the Single Block Competition by one day.  Not only were there road closures, but the Airport had been shut down for awhile to work on ice removal.  This delayed the arrival of some of our Artists.

Today, Monday, Volunteers are at Ice Alaska working on safety issues.  The Carvers now have an extra day to get their blocks positioned where they want them in their sites.  It's a great day for catching up on tasks, then we start over tomorrow, Tuesday, for that marathon of Ice Carving.
