The horn was sounded this morning, February 27, at 9:00 AM, signaling the start of the World Ice Art Championships with the single blocks competing first. The carvers have three days to complete their creations. They must put their tools down when the horn blows again at 9:00 PM on March 1st. They then have approximately an hour to clean up their sites. Each carver has three lights that can be positioned any way onto the sculptures to best enhance them. The judging will begin at 10:00PM under these white lights.

The Single Block Awards and Lighting Ceremony will take place on March 2nd at 7:00 PM. Part of the lighting ceremony involves placing colored lights of the artists’ choosing around their pieces. Donna Walker, wife of Alaska’s Governor, will be present at this year’s ceremony.

If you would like to view the progress of each of the carvers online be sure and check their webcams. With a season pass you may enter the park as often as you like, decide on your favorite sculpture and watch it evolve into its finished work of art.

“In the cool, white

fluorescent light

a scalpel rasps, whispers,

insisting on detail.

A chisel flicks,

deft and sure,

snicking, razing,

in the clean steam

of icebreath.

Formless, frosty

bulbous ice

has pattern

punched into it.

An awl starts clattering,

keen steel stabbing

shards of crystal free

to shower down

as glassy shrapnel.” Author unknown.
