Bio

This is Edwin’s fifth year at Ice Alaska in both the multi-block and single-block competition. He’s looking forward to receiving his green jacket which is awarded after five years of participation. Edwin has been ice carving since 1998 and entering ice carving competitions since 2000. Ice Alaska is the only place where he carves in what carvers call “Big Ice.”

Edwin and his wife, Leigh Anne, come from South Carolina. While Edwin is busy on the carving side, Leigh Anne is a volunteer at Ice Alaska editing videos, helping with web cams and providing carver support. This year is extra special because their son, Lucas, is also joining them for the first time. However, Lucas doesn’t know it yet. He will be born the end of May. They look forward to a second generation of carvers.

Edwin got his start in ice carving during culinary school when he took ice carving classes to create sculptures for the cold food sections in restaurants and buffets, and for special events. His professor, Brian Connors, suggested that Edwin enter ice sculpting contests. Later they went into business together, forming Ice Age Ice Sculptures to create ice sculptures for special events, which is how Edwin earns a living today.

For Edwin, the hardest part of ice carving is planning the design, while carving the design is the fun part. The easiest part is talking about the carving once it’s done. Since ice carvings use large tools, carvers are able to wear gloves to stay warm. Edwin said adrenalin also keeps him warm. There is little difference between big ice carving and culinary ice carving except the tools are larger.

One of Edwin’s proudest achievements is winning last year’s multi-block completion here at Ice Alaska using a Cinderella theme, mixing architecture with art. Edwin was the captain of last year’s team but was quick to point out his team which included Daniel Howell from South Carolina, Angelito Baban from the Philippines, and Heather Brice from Fairbanks. This year his team members are all from South Carolina, a first for Ice Alaska.
