2011 BP World Ice Art Championships
February 22 to March 5, sculptures thereafter on display until March 27 in the Ice Park, Fairbanks, Alaska USA, open daily 10 AM - 10 PM Daily
The weather has been a challenge at the 22nd BP World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska this last week as ice sculptors from 22 countries have competed fiercely to create 49 breathtaking works of art from a single block of ice weighing 4500 pounds (2045 kg). Two feet of snow and winds of up to 50 miles per hour ( 83 km/h) however haven’t hampered the creation of the most beautiful art ever seen here at this year's Papa John's Single Block Classic Competition, which ended on February 24. The awards ceremonies at 8 p.m. were attended by a crowd of hearty Alaskans, sculptors and visitors from around the world after they viewed in the evening the beautifully lighted pieces.
